The act and the rules
- A Government House statement says that on January 18, Governor Albert Bryan Jr. signed the Virgin Islands Cannabis Use Act, Act 8680, which allows cannabis for medicinal, sacramental, and adult purposes and regulates production, distribution, sale, and use.
- That same statement says steps by the Office of Cannabis Regulations, including rules, had to be finished before the law could be fully enacted, and that until then the use and sale of cannabis remained prohibited under the V.I. Code.
- It says simple possession of cannabis has been decriminalized, and that possession of cannabis or its concentrates up to 1 ounce would create a fine of $100 while those restrictions remained in effect.
- A later Government House statement says the governor signed the rules and regulations governing the program, and that the program is a hybrid of medicinal cannabis and adult use, with protections for medicinal users and sacramental use.
