Northern Mariana Islands cannabis history

Reviewed

The code’s short title is the Taulamwaar Sensible CNMI Cannabis Act of 2018, Public Law 20-66, September 21, 2018. Adults 21 or older may keep limited noncommercial homegrown marijuana if they hold a Commission registry card. The same section says a person may not sell that homegrown marijuana for consideration. No official page opened for this history says a licensed retailer is selling marijuana.

This is a short history, not legal advice. The rules that apply today are on the Northern Mariana Islands cannabis laws page. A date is included only when the linked page states it.

At a glance

September 21, 2018Section 53006 allows a household to produce not more than six mature and twelve immature plants, with a registry card, and to possess not more than eight ounces of usable marijuana at the household.
August 21, 2019Section 53014, as amended, says the Commission may not refuse a license because federal law prohibits marijuana. That is not a statement that a retailer is open.
March 18, 2020Emergency regulations published that day said a person may not sell marijuana for commercial recreational use without a license. The notice says those rules were valid for 120 days.

Homegrown marijuana and licenses

  1. Up to one ounce may be gifted to another adult for noncommercial purposes under section 53006.
  2. The emergency notice was not treated as proof that the same commercial-sale text remains in force. A later permanent-adoption notice was not the page used here.
